The beginnings; starting out as an entrepreneur
The dream and lifestyle
As an entrepreneur, you’re passionate about every detail of what you do. Your uniqueness shines through your work. It makes for an exciting adventure forged by you to serve your clients needs in a way that only you can. However the realities of running your own business can make the road you travel sometimes a lonely one. Every element of your business needs you and your time. All the responsibilities which would naturally fall under a team of people from different departments in a company, are now all in your hands that you need to schedule in. That’s a huge pressure and constraint on your time.
When I first ventured into the land of entrepreneurship it was an opportunity to side step the ‘natural’ career progression into management. I say ‘natural’ because it was always the assumed/expected route by my peers, but it felt completely like the opposite to me. Being in a management position for me would be a step too far away from the hands on creativity that I loved.
Someone once asked – “How’s that working for you? Stepping away from management to running your own business?”. I know, it sounds crazy. And yes my time is taken up by a variety of tasks (including management, marketing, accounting, sales). It’s far from all hands on creative, but the personal development side and business knowledge gained from building a business from scratch has far exceeded any expectations and really shaped the services I offer.
As an entrepreneur you never stop learning. Opportunities are always around the corner, and the challenge with every business element is to find ways that work for you, that feel like a natural fit. It was a hugely daunting step, with many challenges along the way, eased by the support and encouragement of friends and family.
The right foundations
There’s more than one way to build a business. I personally wanted to make sure I had everything in place and that I was doing everything the right way (that’s the perfectionist side of me shining through). This was important to me so that I could confidently serve my clients in the best possible way . That involved a huge amount of research and learning. Acknowledged by a business mentor “You’re doing everything the right way – there’s nothing more I can add”. Which was great to hear.
Yet I still felt like I was missing something. I’m not a sales person and that felt like a huge barrier. There had to be a way to authentically let others know how I could help them and let my work speak for itself. Feedback and testimonials have been the real life blood for me, naturally building relationships, becoming a virtual designer as part of their team, gaining referrals and the beauty of repeat business.
